I have broken my key. A piece of the key is still in the lock.
What should I do? |
|
If the item is portable, you should bring it to the locksmith
shop. Even if the key is broken in your car ignition, it is still sometimes
possible to operate the lock with the other piece. (Get it serviced right
away, though! This trick may only work temporarily!) In many cases, the
locksmith can extract the broken piece without disassembling the lock. In
other cases, disassembly may be unavoidable. The locksmith can tell you what
to expect once he or she assesses the situation. If the item is not
portable, you will probably need a service call. Be sure to know your exact
location when you call. Also, be able to tell the locksmith the type and
brand name of the product (If it’s a vehicle, know the year, make and model
and which lock the piece broke in). Be sure to tell the locksmith if you
have other complete keys for the item or if the broken key was your last
one. Be prepared to tell the locksmith whether you still have the other
piece of the broken key. |
